Plant Inspector – North Ayrshire

Experienced engineer with a good knowledge of Pressure Systems, COMAH regulations, (other legislation such as LOLER etc may be an advantage) along with experience of working on high hazard sites required. This position is initially for a 12 month contract period, however may be extended beyond that.

The successful candidate will be required to carry out Risk Based Examination plans, creating bespoke examination plans for High Hazard Equipment at a location in North Ayrshire, Scotland. Although the position is based at a single location there may be a requirement to travel to other locations within the UK.

You will assist the client in generating schemes of examination and advise on the scope and inspection techniques that may be required.

  • You will be required to interact directly with the client and build a close working relationship.
  • Using your engineering knowledge, you will conduct hands-on examination of plant and equipment in accordance with company inspection procedures.  You will require to understand damage mechanisms and their effect on the plant.
  • It may be necessary to complete fitness for service calculations and have difficult conversations with the plant owners.
  • You will prepare detailed reports of examination following your inspections.
  • Support and assist the client in their Risk Based Inspection (RBI) program, and in the development and optimisation of RBI inspection plans.

Necessary Skills & Experience

Skills & Experience

The role requires a combination of experience, technical ability, an awareness of workplace hazards and safety requirements, strong customer communication skills and the confidence to make professional engineering judgements. This is a role for a Professional Engineer that likes to see full operating cycle of equipment.

Key skills and qualities also include:

  • A sound, current knowledge and understanding of all relevant Compliance and Regulatory rules and procedures that relate to Pressure Systems and high hazard locations subject to COMAH.
  • Experience of pressure equipment (Vessels and Pipework), chemical storage tanks and with practical experience in working in a role such as manufacturing / repair / maintenance.
  • Strong customer interaction skills are essential, including excellent communication skills.
  • Good computer literacy.
  • Aptitude and understanding of the need for planning and an ability to prioritise tasks effectively.

Ideally degree qualified in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering, however a minimum qualification, such as HND / HNC / Full Technological Certificate / Board of Trade Chief Engineer 1st Class Certificate of Competence or comparable, in a mechanical discipline is required.

If not already registered, LmP will offer support in obtaining registration through a suitable institute as an Incorporated/Chartered Engineer as appropriate.

Please note: The role will involve regular climbing of ladders, working at height and work in confined spaces.

PCN Level 2 (or ISO 9712 equivalent) certification is preferred for Eddy Current techniques with proven field experience in their application for in-service and new fabrication inspection.

In addition, suitable candidates should also hold the following current valid qualifications:

  • Offshore Survival (BOSIET/FOET)
  • UKOOA Medical certificate incl. Audiometry
  • MIST (Minimum Industry Safety Training)

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate multi-discipline capabilities with extensive conventional NDT certification and experience/certification of the following:

  • Magnetic Flux Leakage (Tank Floor and Pipe scanners)
  • ToFD – Time of Flight Diffraction

  • Pulsed Eddy Current

Reporting to Team Leader – Procurement (shop inspection services).

Role:

Non-Technical Coordinator, responsible to coordinate and schedule 2nd party inspection related services, maintain relationships between clients, inspectors, expeditors, auditors, manufacturers and BV international offices as per contractual obligations.

Focus on both coordinating the provision of inspection services to UK clients and BV Offices, coordinating and scheduling UK inspectors and Engineers, as well as managing contract delivery by other BV country offices for UK based clients, recording activity and responding to requests, using the Bureau Veritas Global Platform for workflow management and inspector/field resource management.

Experience & Skills Required:

  • Coordinate inspection services to Bureau Veritas global network or UK based clients.
  • Have strong organisational and co-ordination skills.
  • Be a self-starter able to work autonomously.
  • Be computer literate with good written English and excellent IT skills. Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience in coordination of shop inspection service would be preferable, but not essential (training will be provided).
  • An experienced financial background would be advantageous, but not essential (training will be provided)
  • Be able to think outside of the box – hold strong problem solving capabilities.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Receive and review technical inspection requests from BV Network and direct Clients for in/out-country inspection.
  • Establish and maintain communications with client, inspector, manufactures and BV offices worldwide where applicable.
  • Ensure projects/assignments are scheduled based on Inspections Test Plans (ITP) and Quality Plan (QP).
  • Compile document package for the equipment, to the inspector, e.g. Inspection test plan (ITP), Quality plan (QP), Drawings and test certificates.
  • Prepare documentation package for allocated inspector ensuring that all instructions are clear and correct to execute the visits.
  • Liaise and submit assignment costs to External/Internal clients. The costs should indicate all the information of expenses required to cover the inspection visits.
  • Maintain up to date all information related to the assignment on the company Global Operations System.
  • Identify and report opportunities for operational and business improvements.
